Abstract. Introduction: In parallel with several current and former players’ high-profile disclosures of psychological difficulties, academic studies published during the past decade have begun to examine mental health professional footballers. To date, a comprehensive review critical analysis these has yet be conducted. Design: A narrative literature was conducted following Medline database search. Results: Thirteen were included in review. variety difficulties explored, including depression, anxiety, distress, disordered eating, sleep disturbance alcohol substance use. Female players reported symptoms common disorders more frequently than their male counterparts. Retired footballers increased rates all compared active players. It is difficult compare prevalence both general population groups other athletes due use screening measures. Conclusion: The appears largely consistent levels keeping elite athlete groups, but further research required clarify this definitively. Injury being retired associated disorders, indicating that support vulnerable transitional periods may particular importance.
